Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observations Project (CEOP), I invite you to participate in the Third Annual CEOP Meeting, which will be held in Melbourne, Australia from 19?21 August 2009 and co-chaired by Drs. Toshio Koike (University of Tokyo) and Ron Stewart (University of Manitoba). The Meeting is being hosted by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) at the Head Office at 700 Collins Street, Docklands, Melbourne, VIC 3001, Australia. Drs. Lawrie Rikus, Helen Cleugh, Jason Evans and Michael Manton have kindly accepted the role to serve as the local organizing committee. A preliminary agenda is attached with a list of local hotels where participants can make reservations. A more detailed agenda as well as other logistics associated with this important event will be provided to you soon. It is necessary that you confirm your plans to participate in the CEOP Meeting by notifying Ms. Akiko Goda (goda@hydra.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp) with copies to Sam Benedict (sam.benedict@gewex.org) and the International GEWEX Project Office (gewex@gewex.org) by 30 July 2009.

Support for the meeting is also being provided by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the University of Tokyo. An initial draft agenda for the meeting is attached.

The final version of the CEOP Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) is available for your reference through the CEOP Home Page at: http://monsoon.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ceop2/implementationplan.html. This document, which is responsive to the latest review by the GEWEX Science Steering Group (SSG), contains the overall science and data objectives and structure for CEOP

Please note that participants are requested to make every effort possible to support their travel from national funding sources. A very limited amount of funding will be provided by the meeting sponsors if national funds can be acquired on a shared basis or if a participant would not otherwise be able to attend. These travel funds will be allocated in accordance with national/international protocols established for previous CEOP meetings. Please address all requests for financial support (with your full coordinates, your detailed estimated budget and itinerary, and the portion of your costs covered by your own institution) to Ms. Akiko Goda (goda@hydra.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp) with copies to Sam Benedict (sam.benedict@gewex.org) and the International GEWEX Project Office (gewex@gewex.org) by30 July 2009.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this important GEWEX activity.

Sincerely,

Thomas Ackerman
