Invitation Letter

Tokyo, 12 August 2010

Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to invite you to participate in a series of AWCI related meetings that will be held successively in Tokyo, Japan from 11th through 18th March 2011. The events include:

1. The Training Course was proposed at the last, 7th AWCI ICG meeting in Tokyo, October 2010 and is intended exclusively for the leaders of the AWCI CCAA studies proposed by member countries. It will take place on 11 – 12 March 2011 (Friday and Saturday) at the facilities of the University of Tokyo, Hongo Campus. Methods for downscaling global climate model output for applications on a basin scale will be explained to the participants.

2. The Global Terrestrial Network – Hydrology (GTN-H, http://gtn-h.unh.edu/) meeting will take place at the Sanjo Kaikan facilities on the Hongo campus on 12 – 13 March 2011. It will include a joint GTN-H and AWCI session on 13 March. All AWCI ICG members and CCAA leaders are invited to attend this event.

3. The Integrated Global Water Cycle Observation (IGWCO) meeting will review the activities of the GEO Water Societal Benefit Area; will review proposals for the 2012-2015 GEO Work Plan, and will initiate new water cycle activities based in large measure on recommendations coming from workshops held during the past year (http://www.watercycleforum.com/workshops.html). In addition, it is also intended to devote some discussion time to the links between IGWCO and GTN-H and other related international programmes including CEOS, UNESCO, GEWEX/WCRP and GWSP. Linkages and collaboration between the global network and the Asia Pacific region will also be discussed. The meeting will be held at the Sanjo Kaikan facilities, from 14 – 15 March 2011. All AWCI ICG members and CCAA leaders are invited to attend this event.

4. The 5th GEOSS Asia Pacific Symposium (http://www.geoss-ap-symposium.org/). Its theme is "Towards the Establishment of Data Sharing and Data Integration in the Asia-Pacific Region", and its objective is to promote the exchange of data and information through the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and to find solutions for achieving societal benefits through GEOSS in the Asia-Pacific region. The Symposium will further strengthen international networking amongst the regionfs countries and share the Asia-Pacificfs experiences with the world. Each country will report on its progress in GEOSS Implementation since last yearfs Symposium. It will be held at the Tokyo Station Conference facility from 16 through 18 March 2011. A full day working session dedicated to data integration and the AWCI strategy planning will take place on 17 March. All AWCI ICG members and CCAA leaders are invited to attend the Symposium.

Also, please take a notice that you are responsible for securing your own visa, if necessary. Please contact the nearest embassy/consulate of Japan in your country and inquiry about the requested documents. We will be happy to assist you in this process, if required.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We are looking forward to meeting with you in Japan in March.

Sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Toshio Koike
